10 to 50 KW Upgrades for Regional AM Broadcast Stations
For most of the history of broadcasting in the U.S., regional AM channels have been limited to a maximum of five kilowatts. This limitation has caused difficulties for licensees trying to cover the expanding populations of cities in large and small markets alike.
Recently, however, the FCC's AM rules have been changed allowing regional facilities to increase power up to fifty kilowatts, limited only by allocation criteria. Evans Associates has found that many of the increases are possible without adding new towers to existing arrays.
For instance, the attached example shows coverage contours from an old-line AM station on a regional channel; the community of license has grown out of its five kilowatt day and night coverage contours through the years (blue contours).
Evans determined that 10 KW day and 7.3 KW at night was possible without changing the tower configuration. The attached coverage maps show the resulting improvement.
